Leveraging brain image analysis through machine intelligence

Senior Software Engineer

Do you love building systems that matter? Systems that improve people's lives? Tensor is looking for a passionate human being to join our team who shares our vision and helps us design and build our medical platform using cloud-native technologies. A Senior Software Engineer eager to experiment, challenge the norms and deliver secure, reliable and performant systems that delight healthcare professionals.

Tensor Medical is a spin-off company of the University of Girona and the Vall d'Hebron Institute of Research (VHIR) in Barcelona with the main goal of helping clinical experts to improve care of patients suffering neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer and Multiple Sclerosis (MS). At Tensor, we have the strong vision to provide the most robust and precise medical imaging biomarkers that will improve the clinical management of patients, predicting future disease stages and to optimizing the treatment decisions for each patient.

We are a small remote-first startup that dreams big but always with a firm foot on the ground. Our team is composed of 8 members including medical key opinion leaders and internationally awarded medical imaging researchers. We are completely convinced that medical imaging biomarkers will revolutionize neuroradiology, so we are working on our mission to become the standard protocol in the clinical management of neurodegenerative diseases.

What are we trying to solve?

Nowadays, we are focusing first on improving the clinical management of MS patients. MS patients are treated with different disease modifying treatments where their adherence is mostly based on the lack of brain Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) activity (presence of new lesions) during periodic follow-ups. However, neuroradiologists quantify the presence of lesions by a tedious, time-consuming, and error-driven visually process that reduces their sensitivity below 50% in some cases, which can lead to sub-optimal treatments and increasing disability of the patient in the mid-term.

Currently, there are several automated solutions in the market that can deal with MS follow-up of MRI activity. However, the latest international clinical guides published last year in the Lancet Neurology do not recommend the use of software solutions for MS follow-up mostly because of 1) the lack of evidence that these tools work in clinical settings and 2) the need for strict standardization of image acquisition (i.e., identical MRI system, pulse sequences, and acquisition parameters).

At Tensor, we are developing copilot.ms, a cloud-based software platform powered by cutting-edge machine learning algorithms that help neuroradiologists to improve the assessment of MRI activity in MS patients. Currently, we are validating our software platform at various hospitals around Europe, and working with the medical device regulation to certify our product in Europe and United States before 2024. However, still we have countless ideas and features to integrate to our product, so we want to grow our team with new members.

Role description

We are looking for a new passionate member for our team who shares our vision, a senior software engineer who will help us to improve the copilot.ms software in ways we cannot imagine.

As a Senior Software Engineer, your job is to help us design and build copilot.ms from the ground up using cloud-native technologies. Working closely with the founders, you will participate in decisions, and we expect you to proactively bring initiative and ideas to the table. Being in a heavily regulated environment, testability and automation in our platform is key to move fast safely. You will be in close contact with our users to gather feedback to extract possible new features or detect problems to solve. Strong working relationships will be key to your success. With research being a key aspect of our success, your day-to-day work will also include the exciting task of bringing research prototypes into production.

We would love to meet you if you:

  • Care about our mission.
  • Have ideas about how to make systems scale in the cloud.
  • Are keen to experiment, challenge norms and deliver secure, reliable and performant systems that delight healthcare professionals.
  • Are very collaborative, and you enjoy participating in code reviews and discussions about architecture or design.
  • Have strong experience in developing and consuming REST services and familiarity with REST best practices.
  • Have experience with Web Technologies and Cloud Technologies (preferably Microsoft Azure).
